In the year 1988, a woman named Marie is out in the woods camping with others. Marie's little sister, Sofia, runs off and disappears into the misty wood, forcing the former to look for her. The story then slowly unravels sequence-by-sequence into a garbled affair with invisible spirits who force Marie into doing busywork fetchquests and solving a variety of puzzles. The sombre tale ends happily, but without explicit clues of what just happened. This is partly because of the presentation, or lack off it thereof, since all the characters are invisible. Marie also has no body of own. Sofia is only briefly seen at the beginning of the game. With the spirits not having a shape in most of the scenes, it is difficult to feel invested and emotionally attached to the story. Most of the story is presented with a voice-over style commentary, leaving much of it for the player to imagine. Perhaps this design choice was dictated by lack of funds, time constraints, or something else. All in all, a voice-over story exposition commentary just doesn't cut the mustard, especially with practically no visible characters on the screen at any time. The audiovisual design is good. The game can look great during the night scenes with foggy woods, gardens full of thorns, and abandoned shacks just standing in time. There are some fps drops during sequences when the player enters from one location to another (for e.x. climbs into an attic of a house), but these are nothing to be worried about. The ambient, peaceful musical score accompanies the game perfectly whether you are searching your surroundings or trying to figure out a solution to a tricky puzzle. The puzzles themselves are, sadly, a hit-or-miss affair. The 9 optional puzzle boxes represent some of the most entertaining puzzle design in the game, but can be skipped entirely if wanted. The gains to be had here are just some bits of story exposition which are not crucial to the plot. The other puzzles are largely divisive. Some of them are tedious and plain annoying, like door lock puzzles with round discs. With these, you have a disc with many spinning outer layers which need to be spun correctly to make a sign or figure. There are a bunch of others varying from sensible and understandable to the kinds which make you use a guide or a wiki. I had to check a guide for some of the puzzles, and even watching the right solution I still had no idea what kind of logic the game devs were trying to follow. The logic at display was very skewed at best. Granted there is a hint system in place. You are not penalized for using this, but the system ultimately fails to provide insight into the puzzles when it's most desperately needed. Especially later on, the game has a knack for making the player run around collecting items and doing fetchquest busywork that amounts to annoying padding of the overall length. The price is also a point of contention. For a meager 6 hours, 20 euros is a rather steep price. There is practically no replay value here whatsoever, with anyone being able to get 100% of the achievements pretty easily on the first run. Altogether, Lake Ridden looks and sounds good, but falls short of any sort of greatness because of its tedious puzzle design, arbitrary story with no visible on-screen characters, and a high price point. If you absolutely must experience this trip, do so only during a deep, deep sale.Pros:+ Beautiful audiovisual presentation+ Some great puzzlesCons:- Lacklustre, humdrum story which is not even properly presented on-screen- High price for only 6 hours- Counterintuitive puzzle design- Fetchquests. After about 6 hours, I've just completed all the achievements for this game. Lake Ridden is a mystery puzzle game that focuses a lot on atmosphere and mood, but is still challenging in places.Best parts:- Great scenery, including suitably spooky weather which changes throughout the game- Interesting and challenging puzzles with a good hint system- A large area to explore with lots of lore to discoverMinor complaints:- Some secondary puzzles are reused past the point where they're interesting, particularly the "puzzle boxes"- There is one puzzle that amounts to "read the developer's mind" - i.e. guess semi-randomly until you get the answer- At a couple of points the "atmospherically dark" lighting reaches the point of "I can't see anything at all"- The open world portion has no map and few shortcuts, so there's more than a little annoying backtracking, especially in the middle of the game- Game lags noticeably when you enter a new area- While the game saves all the lore notes during a session, it doesn't keep them if you close the game and reload, which is a shame - I wanted to go through and try and discover all the letters.. Lake Ridden has an identity crisis. It tries to be a puzzle game, a walking simulator and have some kind of mystery narration. Some good, but the bad ones are repeated. As a walking simulator, you can open cupboards and pick up items, but apart from the forest, there's nothing to look at. The story is told with letters and quite bad voice acting, and in the ending, I'm not even sure who talked or what was happening overall. There's also hints of a horror game... walking with a lantern, lighting up torches and candles can feel a bit like Amnesia, though the soundtrack is calming and all the other scary bits are missing.Rather than being free investigation, the story just pushes the player to the right location and puzzle. Maybe I was expecting this to be a myst-like similar to Quern and Obduction.. Lake Ridden was a lovely surprise while it lasted. The story was engaging and a nice mix of voiceover and eerie journals and other things to read. It has a very distinct Myst feel even though the world is a bit more comprehensible. The puzzles are mostly challenging and rewarding, although I found it was easy to guess on a couple toward the end that took away from that a little. The music is deceptively light at times, but it introduces this great dynamic of making you feel comfortable as if you're wrapped in its familiarity and then shattering that when you hear some wild animal screeching out in the woods. Maybe it's not for everyone, but it worked for me and was a nice change of pace from the "this is a spooky game, and you're going to know it" motif and was a pleasant surprise that it was. That's the other thing; this game has a horror element to it. There are a few jump scares, but mostly it comes from a scary and ominous atmosphere. Mainly, this is thanks to the storyline and the loneliness of walking around this once inhabited desolate world. Now, minor spoilers here, so if you plan to play this to experience it yourself (and you should), then stop reading and give it a go. This is also where pretty much my only gripe is. The game starts pretty linearly, go here, figure out how to open this door, rinse and repeat. Then the game opens up and lets you walk around this abandoned town, in some of the buildings, and a mansion on the hill (which you revisit from time to time). I felt like after the second or third time backtracking between the two and spending 30 or so minutes to solve a puzzle, the pace slowed too much, especially in the later game. At a certain point I just wanted to figure things out or have another major plot point introduced, but instead, I felt like I was spinning my wheels and hoping for the end instead of enjoying it. And that's the other thing; the game is kind of short. It took me 7 hours to complete in two sittings. It's not that it needed to be longer and again, it would have called for a new plot point to make it worthwhile, but I would love to have seen another new area and have different puzzle variety to tackle. Perhaps this could be solved with DLC, where you can play a different storyline in the same world. I'm not sure of the dev's plans for the games, but one could only hope.I also had a glitch where I stopped playing after the basement area, and when I came back the game wouldn't trigger the next objective, so I had to replay the previous chapter to fix it. I'm sure not everyone will encounter this, but worth mentioning. Also, don't look at the chapter selection if you don't want to know where you go next. For some reason it lists all the areas of the game even if you haven't gotten that far yet.In summary and gripes aside, this game is absolutely worth playing if you like atmosphere puzzlers with an engaging story. The price may be high for some but at the very least add it to your wishlist and buy it on sale and prepare to immerse yourself in its bleak and gorgeous world.. This is... fine. A little spooky, remarkably pretty, especially the night sequences, but there really isn't much else to say about it. The 'mystery' is both fairly obvious and... never actually laid out, as in I had figured out the basic shape of the thing about four clues in, but why any of it happened, or mattered, or what the dude had do do with it, never came up, and frankly at that point I also didn't really care. The puzzles are more obtuse than tricky; most of it is 'find thing, take thing to several locations spread out over the map, return to first location, repeat', with some pattern matching for flavor, also not terribly complex. (If you know anything about actual mechanics prepare to be confused; I had more trouble with the 'fix the machine' sequences than anything else, mostly because, as a mechanic, the actual way you'd fix x or y was not what the game wanted you to do.)The voice acting is very bad, but not unlistenable, the writing mostly good, but never great, and occasionally flat out boring, it's very pretty but never quite beautiful, but overall it's very much the sum of its parts, and frankly as a walking simulator mystery, it does pretty much everything it promises, so I'm not going to not recommend it. I certainly wouldn't pay $20 for it though.tl;dr It's exactly what it says on the tin, 7/10 wouldn't play it again don't regret having done so, wait for it to go on sale.. Main pros:- Atmosphere and world- Some interesting puzzle conceptsMain cons:- Short game (3-5 hrs)- A lot of backtracking during parts of the game- Poor narrative- Confusing story wrap-up by end- Linear puzzles and linear progressionThis game has some very lovley scenery and a really good atmosphere. Walking around and taking in the sights is a big part of the experience. The puzzles are in my opinion too few and far between and they are quite linear in layout. I found the difficulty of the puzzles to be easy-moderate. That being said most puzzle designs where different and interesting.I did not find the story and narrative that compelling. However it did build an interesting mystery during the first parts of the game, I found it did poorly trying to resolve this mystery by the end, rushing through poorly narrated exposition with obvious plot twists. The voice acting was decent if perhaps alittle shrill and grating. The narrative was also quite "hand holdy", often unnessearily having the main character stating the obvious.I was disappointed with how short this game was. I completed this game in 4.5 hrs and found all the "hidden" puzzle boxes.I would be very hesitant with recommending this game. If you're looking to buy it, be aware that it's more in the style of something like "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" or "Firewatch" then a Myst-like puzzle game.. Unfortunately, much as I wish I could recommend this, I didn't enjoy my time, despite the soothing atmosphere and generous hint system. The story never clicked with me, and I found the puzzles relied too much on intuiting the designer's intentions. Even after figuring out the solution for many, I could point to other interpretations that seemed equally valid. The visuals are soothing, but so much of the game is shrouded in mist that it was confusing to navigate. Unfortunately, this one is a miss for me.. This honestly isnt what I was hoping it would be. The story is vague and the characters incredibly difficult to keep apart. They are all "invisible" (which seems more like laziness...), It's the same 3 puzzles over and over between the 'main puzzles' and the game has you backtrack constantly. After four hours, the story didn't pick up to a point where I could genuinly say I was having fun. Graphics are 'eh' and there are quite a few weird bugs and glitches. If you're hoping for this to be like Dear Esther or The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, you'll be dissapointed.. Such a beautiful and serene game! Can really recommend this if you like to go around and carefully take in your surroundings while solving hard, but not too hard, puzzles. All while unraveling a mysterious story.VR support when devs?! ;). I would rate this game about 3 stars out of 5. I wouldn't strongly endorse it, but it had enough puzzles to keep me interested for the 6 to 7 hours I played it. The writing/story is not very good...and the voice acting is just plain bad. But, there was some good graphics and sceneic enviornments to keep it interesting. There were a couple puzzles at the end which I thought didn't make sense, even after getting the hint, but otherwise the puzzles were pretty straight forward. Not a bad game, not a great game...I would definitely wait for it to go on sale, at $10, it's worth it...at $20, it's not Lake Ridden Patch #5: Hi all!
